According to more than a few bewildered e-mails I’ve received, there are several ParetoLogic employees who are just now learning about it. Well, for your sake and for others like you, here’s the latest news and a brief summary of what’s happening.

The Rundown: Sony BMG, in an effort to protect over 500,000 new music CDs from being copied or ripped onto a PC or CD-R, included a small piece of software called a rootkit in the data track of every CD. Rootkits are pieces of software notorious for hiding system processes and masking the installation and function of Trojan horses and other virus-like programs. Rootkits can be very dangerous and greatly compromise a PC’s security.

Here’s a compelling story. Wired Magazine’s Simson Garfinkel compiled a list of some of the most devastating software bugs of all time. Most of these bugs were mistakes, unintentional coding or calculation errors, while others were more intentionally malicious.
